The IMIF Program Defined
Private Lessons: Lessons given by internationally-acclaimed teachers are tailored to meet the student's greatest desires and needs, while focusing on the student's solo and chamber music repertoire that will be performed at the formal concerts for peers and the general public. Each student receives four lessons.
Chamber Music: Intense daily coaching sessions rotate among faculty coaches to learn how they similarly or differently approach the fine art of ensemble playing, with students knowing that they will be performing their ensemble piece together in a matter of a few short days.
Faculty and Guest Artist Performances: Students and the general public enjoy thrilling performances by IMIF faculty, coaches and guest artists as they perform solo and ensemble works in the same venues where students will later be performing.
Masterclasses: Based on IMIF's formal audition process, students are selected to perform in public master classes by some of the world's leading authorities on their instruments, among them prize winners of the Tchaikovsky, Queen Elizabeth and Marguerite Long Jacques Thibaud international competitions.
Student Performances: Formal concerts in formal concert attire (long gowns; coat and tie) over a three-day span bring all students to the center stage in individual and ensemble performances, showcasing their hard-earned achievements over the course of the 10-day musical festival.
Workshops on Topics Such as "Effective Practicing" and "Careers in Music:" The panel of IMIF faculty share their personal experiences of practice room trials and tribulations, then open the floor to Q&A's, which always leads to lively discussion.
Concert Tour: A highlight of the IMIF experience brings solo and ensemble performances to appreciative audiences throughout Maryland and Pennsylvania, adding authenticity and depth to the IMIF musical experience. Participation is limited and selected based on audition material.
Arts Experience: In addition to the intense musical curriculum, all students participate in a series of interdisciplinary arts experiences. These include dance, theatre, art, and relaxation, and improvisation. This innovative, comprehensive, and inter-disciplinary curriculum is a vital part of the IMIF experience, assisting participants in becoming more expressive and communicative persons and performers.
Morning Stretches: After the morning reflections, your mind, body and soul are energized with 15 minutes of gentle, low-impact lymphatic cleansing stretches and exercises to relieve stress and remove toxins from key muscle groups that aggravate musicians: neck, shoulders, wrists, hands, lower back, calves and more.
Morning Reflections: We spend five to ten minutes every morning as a group listening to one another's amazing stories, perhaps an observation or a special experience, or a personally empowering achievement or challenge.
